This project aims to enhance traffic safety and encourage active transportation in our community through the construction of 1.6 miles of bicycle and walking paths, 3 roundabouts, sidewalks and a comprehensive education and outreach program.

Programming will include traffic safety education for 2nd–through 5th–grade students at Del Rey Elementary, Santa Lucia Elementary, and Chalone Middle School. Students will participate in in-class presentations and hands-on activities to practice safe walking and bicycling skills.

King City High School students will be recruited to help develop sidewalk art marking safe routes to schools and be asked to help create a safety and/or active transportation encouragement campaign for their peers.

The Health Department will lead a community-wide safety campaign, addressing issues raised by the community, such as aggressive driver behavior, speeding, and outreach to seniors to ensure their road safety.

To further promote active transportation, the project will host a community-wide Open Streets event and family fun festivals, featuring local vendors and safe routes to school partners.

Additionally, the project will pilot a balance bike workshop for Kindergarteners, encouraging early cycling skills, and introduce a walking school bus program at two elementary schools. This program will include school and parent engagement, as well as volunteer training, to ensure the safe participation of all students.

Together, these efforts will help foster a safer, more active, and engaged community, supporting both pedestrian and cyclist safety while promoting healthier, sustainable transportation options.

Sidewalk Art

As part of the grant received for the San Antonio Path project, a Sidewalk Art Project will kick off in the second half of 2025. The project team is looking to form a Sidewalk Art Steering Committee. This committee would  work on coordinating a Call for Art for artists to submit artwork, plan a community election on eligible art, and work with the project team on identifying locations to install the art. Art work can range from 2ft by 2ft pieces to 6ft by 30ft sidewalk murals. Selected artwork for installment from the community election will also earn a cash prize.

Walking School Bus

The Walking School Bus is where parents and students are encouraged to walk to school in large groups in an effort to increase safety and visibility. TAMC is partnering with Ecology Action and the King City Union School District to establish a Walking School Bus Program in Santa Lucia and Del Rey Elementary Schools. Participants would meet at a known location away from the school and walk together to school in time before the bell rings.

The Walking School Bus Program is expected to kick off this fall in the new 2025-2026 school year. Parents who are interested in participating are encouraged to sign up to receive updates on the upcoming Walking School Bus.

Ciclovia

Ciclovia is an open streets event that has been held in King City and will be returning again through the San Antonio Path project! Ciclovia promotes healthy living and builds community relationships by temporarily closing a street corridor to vehicle traffic and opens the right of way to active movement such as walking, biking, skating and more.

The Active Transportation Project Team is looking for volunteers to help form a steering committee that would plan for the next Ciclovia. The steering committee would meet monthly for 10 months. King City residents are encouraged to sign up to receive more updates on Ciclovia planning.

The project will consist of a dedicated bike path on San Antonio Drive from the San Antonio/Mildred intersection to the San Antonio/Broadway intersection. The dedicated bike path will continue up Broadway to the Broadway/Mildred intersection. 3 roundabouts will be installed on Broadway intersections of Franciscan Way, Canal St, and Mildred Ave. An additional bike lane will installed on Mildred Ave from the Broadway/Mildred intersection to the San Antonio/Mildred intersection.
