Westlawn Neighborhood Stormwater Improvement Study

As part of Fairfax County’s Flood Risk Reduction Policy, the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES), Stormwater Planning Division, has partnered with GKY & Associates, WSP USA, and Triad Engineering to do a Neighborhood Stormwater Improvement Study (NSIS) in the Westlawn community.

The main goals of the study are:

  • See if the pipes are in good condition and working properly.
  • Educate residents about ways to prepare for future flooding.
  • Develop a long-term plan to keep the stormwater pipes working and reduce flood risk.

The study team actions include:

  • Inspect about 6,000 feet of underground stormwater pipes and develop a computer model to show how stormwater moves through the study area.
  • Present findings on the stormwater system condition and how often flooding happens and find possible solutions.
  • Work with community members to learn about their experiences and determine the next steps to improve stormwater management and lower flooding risk.

Survey Purpose

Fairfax County is using this survey to learn about flooding problems in Westlawn. Your answers will help the County understand flooding, build stormwater models, and look for ways to reduce future flooding. The survey asks about your experiences in the neighborhood, stormwater problems you have seen, and any property you own or rent in Westlawn. You may also share photos, videos, or other records that show what you have experienced.

This survey is for people who live, used to live, own or rent property, work, or spend time in the Westlawn neighborhood. If none of these apply to you, this survey is not for you.

Taking this survey is your choice. You do not have to share your name. Your answers will be used only for this study. You only need to share your contact information if you want project updates or want the study team to contact you about your answers. Your personal information will not be shared outside of the study team.

The survey should take about 15–20 minutes to complete. It may take more or less time depending on how much information you share. Thank you for helping Fairfax County learn more about stormwater and flooding in Westlawn.

Study Location

The study is in the Falls Church area. It is located south of Arlington Boulevard, north of Westlawn Drive, and east of Wayne Road.
