Help us choose a name for this Port Wentworth Housing Project
Chatham County, in partnership with Costal Habitat and Port Wentworth, broke ground for an 83-unit housing development project in June 2024, and we want your help naming the development.
Please review these three potential names that the planning group feels represents the geographic area, as well as the history and intent of the project, and vote for your favorite below.
Potential Names:
Option 1: Musgrove Harbor Crossing
Located about one mile east of the founding Georgia colony historical marker on land now owned by Imperial Sugar Company was located the home of John Musgrove and his wife, Mary, who engaged there in trade, farming, and cattle raising. Mary Musgrove, famed in Georgia history for her services to General James Edward Oglethorpe as interpreter, was the daughter of an English trader and Creek Indian mother. The Musgrove house near the historical marker was a seat of hospitality.
Mixed with the word "Harbor," which represents a place of found memory or a place to find shelter, and "Crossing" which ties to the proximity of the various railroads in the geographic area.
Option 2: Sawmill Quarters
The Sawmill Quarter was an area that supported families who served one of the largest economic engines in the 1900s, the Savannah Sawmill. The Mill closed; many of its residents purchased land on (Garden Road) now Grange Road and created a community that lasted until the growth of GA Ports Authority.
Option 3: The Villages at Carter Manor
The Villages at Carter Manor, a tribute to President Jimmy Carter’s lifelong commitment to affordable housing and community development. Through his work with Habitat for Humanity, President Carter has touched the lives of thousands of families by helping to build safe and affordable homes, providing not just shelter but also hope for a better future.
The name "The Villages at Carter Manor" reflects our mission to create a supportive, close-knit community where families can thrive. "The Villages" symbolizes the sense of unity and shared purpose that will define this development, offering residents not just homes, but a place where they belong. "Carter Manor" honors President Carter’s profound impact on affordable housing, encapsulating his legacy of service and dedication to those in need.
This subdivision is designed to provide affordable, energy-efficient homes that foster a sense of pride and belonging. It stands as a testament to the values President Carter has championed throughout his life — integrity, compassion, and a belief in the power of community.
By naming this development "The Villages at Carter Manor," we honor President Carter’s work and ensure that future generations will continue to benefit from his vision of accessible, sustainable housing for all.
