Thank you to all who participated in the Public Input Project Survey for the new Monroe Road Park!

This feedback is critical to be able to design and construct a park to meet your needs and address any concerns. Common themes of the comments were as follows:

  1. Preserve the tree canopy – Every effort will be made to preserve the existing tree canopy. Dead, dying or invasive species will be removed as required. Most of the park amenities and the Recycling Center are in the existing open/cleared lawn areas. Park trail alignments will avoid existing trees.
  2. Security/Safety – The park will be open from dawn to dusk. the Recycling Center is envisioned open from 8 AM to 5PM. with no night-time use. Gates will be installed at both the entrance to the recycling center and the Monroe Road driveway to prohibit vehicle access after closings. A proposed 12’ paved, multi-use path along Monroe Road will provide safe pedestrian/bicycle access to and from the park from the Monroe Road access.
  3. Traffic – There should not be any major concerns for traffic issues. Large trucks will not be allowed to use the Recycling Center, the use for this center will be for cars and pickup trucks. The  vehicles that service the recycling center will generally access the center in non-peak rush hours. The park will have a small parking lot (less than 16 spaces) for park patrons. The intent for this park is to be accessed by the surrounding neighborhood by walking/biking from several neighborhood access trails. There is an existing CATS bus stop in front of the park for those that choose this type of transportation. Any future traffic signals on Monroe Road will need to be determined by NC Department of Transportation. We have alerted Charlotte Department of Transportation about the poor condition/required repairs of Lantana Drive cul-de-sac.
  4. Pond Access – There has been some confusion about the existing pond. The pond is privately-owned and the pond property lines will be fenced to deter trespassing and liability concerns of the property owner.
  5. Recycling Center – There has been a wealth of comments regarding the proposed Recycling Center which have offered both supportive and critical perspectives. Mecklenburg County Solid Waste and their design team have reviewed the comments and tare considering changes based upon the feedback received. Mecklenburg County Solid Waste will continue to evaluate the concerns raised by the community regarding the recycling center operations including noise and appearance.  Additional information will be provided at the next Open House on May 11th from 5 to 7.
  6. Suggested Park Amenities – The top 6 requested Active/Passive amenities people would like to see in the park are as follows:
    1. Multi-Use Path/Trails
    2. Play Structures
    3. Open Lawn Play Area
    4. Outdoor Fitness Equipment
    5. Benches/Seating
    6. Shelter/Gazebo

We know we can’t provide them all suggestions in the park at this time. We appreciate your comments and can look at adding requested Active/Passive amenities to other nearby parks where appropriate.

Thank you for attending the Public Meeting on March 23!  Please take the Project Survey to provide additional input for your new park.  The online Project Survey will be available until April 16, 2023.  You can also mail a hard copy to Kevin Brickman at 5841 Brookshire Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28216.
