Project background
This project:
- Placed new water main and replaced lead water services with new copper water services into properties.
- Reconstructed the street, curb and gutter, including:
- Narrowed Garfield Avenue from Lake Michigan Drive to Jackson Street by 2 feet on both sides of the street to make a consistent road width and add more greenspace.
- Installed curb extensions at intersections to shorten pedestrian crossings, better define the parking lane, and help slow traffic speeds.
- Maintained the streets design.
- Installed shared use pavement markings and route signage to create a neighborhood bikeway.
- Made minor improvements to the storm sewer system, which handles storm water. Stormwater is rainwater or water from melting snow or ice. The stormwater system includes catch basins (the grates found periodically along curbs) that collect the water from the street and carry it into a main line.
