Georgetown Bicycle & Pedestrian Study

Georgetown Bicycle & Pedestrian Study

The town of Georgetown, DE, located in central Sussex County, serves as a throughway for accessing Delaware beaches.  The Town has experienced rapid growth in recent years that has come with additional demand for creating a safe accessible environment for walking and bicycling to connect local neighborhoods to downtown areas and nearby recreational amenities.

In 2023, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) initiated a study evaluating bike and pedestrian safety near schools, town buildings, and recreation facilities along North and South Bedford Street and within the town center. The approximate limits of the study extend just north of North Georgetown Elementary along North Bedford Street through the Georgetown Circle onto South Bedford Street to Arrow Safety Road. The study limits also extend east and west on Route 9 from Georgetown Middle School to Parsons Lane and north to the Perdue facility off of Savannah Road. Facilities included in this study were the Georgetown Public Library and the baseball fields along Route 9. Additionally, the recommendations from the 2018 Town of Georgetown Walkability and Connectivity Study were reviewed to determine if any have been implemented throughout the town. Initial feedback received at the November 10, 2022 Return Day outreach event was also considered. Initial results of the study were documented in a 2023 draft Existing Conditions memo.

In late 2024, the Existing Conditions memo was updated to capture recent bicycle and pedestrian mobility improvements the Town has recently made and upcoming initiatives to further address safety issues. The existing conditions were presented at a public workshop on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.  Representatives from the Town, DelDOT, and their consultant project team were available to answer questions and gather feedback from the public on additional bike and pedestrian safety concerns and locations.  Information was also provided at the February 27, 2025 First State Community Action Agency Dinner. A brief presentation was given that provided an overview of the project and methods of providing feedback.  A handout was also provided to attendees.

A second Public Workshop was held Tuesday, April 29, 2025 from 4;30-6:30 p.m. during which preliminary improvement recommendations were presented.  Representatives from the Town, DelDOT, and their consultant project team were available to answer questions and gather feedback from the public.  Information on the preliminary recommendations, to include a handout, was also provided at the May 15, 2025 First State Community Action Agency Dinner.

The final recommendations were presented at the June 23, 2025 Town Council meeting.

The Project Timeline provides an overview of key milestones.  The tabs above will include additional project details as they become available or are developed. The materials presented at both public workshops, both First State Community Action Agency dinners, and the June 23, 2025 Town Council meeting are available under the 'Documents' tab.
