Guadalupe Street (46th - 51st St.) Pedestrian Crossing Islands
Guadalupe Street (46th - 51st St.) Pedestrian Crossing Islands
OVERVIEW
The City of Austin is improving safety and mobility near Intramural Fields through the Pedestrian Crossing Program. As part of the first phase, we will install paint-and-post pedestrian crossing islands on Guadalupe Street between West 46th Street and West 51st Street. These improvements aim to provide a safer and more comfortable crossing for people walking or biking to access UT sports fields and bus stops, especially children, older adults and people with mobility challenges. The paint-and-post pedestrian crossing islands will be upgraded to concrete pedestrian crossing islands in a future phase.
LEGEND
Crossing islands reduce the time a person is exposed to oncoming traffic when crossing a street. They break up crossings into two stages and provide a safe space to wait partway across the street. This allows a person walking or biking to focus on one direction of traffic at a time while crossing. Crossing islands also help keep motor vehicle speeds low and encourage drivers to yield to pedestrians.
TIMELINE
Construction for Phase 1 is expected to begin in late fall 2026 and is funded through the 2018 Mobility Bond. The street will remain open during construction, though minor delays may occur. All work is weather-dependent and subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances.
