In December 2025, the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Planning Organization (AOMPO) adopted the 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The $311 million plan identifies transportation needs, sets goals, and budgets projects for highways, public transit, biking, walking, and more. It incorporates public input and identifies funding sources to meet our community’s needs, promote sustainability, and support economic growth.
LRTP Overview
What is an LRTP?
A Long Range Transportation Plan is a comprehensive roadmap for enhancing transportation in a metropolitan area over the next 25 years. The plan is updated every 5 years to reflect new trends, priorities, and funding assumptions.
Having an LRTP is required for metropolitan planning areas to be eligible to receive federal funding for transportation projects.
What Area is Covered by the LRTP?
The LRTP covers the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Planning Organization (AOMPO) area. This area includes the Auburn and Opelika metropolitan areas and parts of Lee County.
