Introduction

The Oxford Trail Improvement Project is a publicly-funded, community-led initiative to fulfill the promise of Oxford Trail as a community assest for the neighborhoods of Southwest Grand Rapids. The project will improve over 2.5 miles of new and existing trail in ways that neighbors in the Roosevelt Park and the Black Hills neighborhoods found to be of greatest lasting value.

The City developed the Oxford Connects engagement process as a part of its commitment to transform this shared stretch of Oxford Trail into the pedestrian heart of the community. The hope is to create opportunities for Southwest area neighbors to enrich their lives through enhanced access as well as recreational, environmental, social and cultural amenities.

The map above shows the status of the trail today, the current phase of trail expansion, and future phases.

Project Purpose + Vision:

  • Community Connection: The project aims to transform the Oxford Trail into a welcoming and active space that connects the Southwest neighborhoods of Grand Rapids, fostering a sense of belonging and unity.
  • Revitalization and Accessibility: By enhancing over 2.5 miles of trail, we’re making the space accessible to everyone, providing pathways for walking, biking, and outdoor recreation in a natural setting.
  • Cultural and Social Enrichment: With input from the community, the trail design integrates public art, gathering spaces, and cultural features that celebrate the vibrant local culture.
  • Environmental Commitment: We’re emphasizing sustainability by incorporating native plants, preserving mature trees, and ensuring the trail harmonizes with the natural environment.
  • Healthy and Inclusive Spaces: Our vision is for Oxford Trail to become a safe, inclusive space that encourages physical activity, social gatherings, and community-led events.

  • The project team revised the design plans for the Oxford Street Trail crossing. The original concept included removing the Oxford Street bridge and constructing a new tunnel. After further review, the City’s Engineering Department determined that the bridge could safely remain in place, eliminating the need for a tunnel. The project was redesigned to take advantage of the existing bridge, creating a more open and accessible trail underpass.
