Why Roundabouts?

Roundabouts are generally considered safer than traditional intersections for several reasons, making them an excellent choice for improving traffic flow and safety at the intersection of Sam Bass and Hairy Man Road. Here are some key benefits of roundabouts:

  • Reduced Conflict Points: Roundabouts reduce the number of conflict points (places where vehicle paths cross) compared to traditional intersections. This decrease lowers the likelihood of collisions.
  • Lower Speeds: Vehicles in roundabouts travel at lower speeds (usually 15-25 mph), reducing the severity of any accidents that do occur.
  • Elimination of Head-On and T-Bone Collisions: Roundabouts eliminate head-on and right-angle (T-bone) collisions, which are common and often severe at traditional intersections.
  • Continuous Flow of Traffic: The continuous flow of traffic in a roundabout reduces the likelihood of rear-end collisions that are common at signalized intersections.
  • Improved Pedestrian Safety: With fewer conflict points and slower vehicle speeds, roundabouts can be safer for pedestrians crossing the street.

These safety and efficiency benefits are why we are considering roundabouts as a solution for the intersection of Sam Bass and Hairy Man Road. Your feedback on the proposed designs will help us choose the best configuration for our community.
