Introduction

About This Survey

This survey is based on the Findings and Preliminary Recommendation report and will be very similar to the content of the in-person open house. It includes:

1. A brief summary of the findings we've gathered so far. Take a look at the full report for a deeper dive into demographics, history, land use, public realm, market analysis, and engagement.

2. Preliminary ideas for discussion. These ideas and recommendations are not final - they are meant for your feedback and to help refine final recommendations.

3. An optional demographic survey, which helps us understand who we're hearing from and how we can improve outreach.

What's Next: Following public comment, the project team will continue our analysis with detailed policies and supportive graphics throughout the summer and fall. OP will revise and release a final report in September 2026.

We look forward to hearing your feedback!

Study Overview

The H Street Land Use and Market Study focuses on land use, public space, and economic development on H Street NE between 3rd and 15th Street NE.

It looks at how land uses, storefronts, public spaces, and transportation work today, and where changes could better support the people who live, work, and spend time along the corridor.

The goals of the project are to:

  • Support dynamic and resilient retail with existing and new businesses
  • Bolster the corridor identity as a destination for arts and culture
  • Create a land use strategy that guides growth
  • Design people-centered public spaces in strategic locations

H Street NE is one of Northeast DC's most recognizable commercial corridors. It features local businesses, arts and culture, entertainment, and housing that reflect the corridor’s legacy as a cultural destination. H Street has seen significant changes since the 2004 planning study, and it’s time to update guidance. Over the last two decades, H Street has seen growth, but recent economic shifts have revealed challenges, such as retail vacancy and stalled projects, that signal a need for more study. The study focuses on key places along the corridor where improvements could make a meaningful difference.
