Thank you for visiting the project website for the I-275 SmartLane (HAM/CLE IR 275 30.98/0.00, PID 115417) project. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) put this website together to share information with the public about the following proposed project work:
A new smartlane on I-275 eastbound from US-42 to SR-28 and westbound from SR-28 to Loveland Madeira Road.
Associated bridge work to accommodate the SmartLane on the I-275 structures over Loveland Madeira Road/Railroad Tracks and the Little Miami River.
Auxiliary lane on I-275 eastbound from US-22 to Loveland Madeira Road.
Dual exit on I-275 eastbound at SR-28.
Potential interchange improvements on I-275 eastbound at Reed Hartman Highway and I-71.
This site is a self-guided tour through a series of tabs that highlight the proposed improvements. There are questions included on select pages for you to provide feedback on the project. Feedback received will be used by the project team as the design is refined and advanced for construction.
Begin by reviewing the OVERVIEW discussion in the section below. To advance between pages, click on the green CONTINUE button located at the bottom of each page. You can also move between pages by clicking the blue tabs at the top of the discussion section. If you would like to see larger versions of any of the graphics, click on the image and a larger version will pop up on the screen. Additional project-related materials, including a downloadable project fact sheet, are posted under the DOCUMENTS section on the right hand side below.
Please note that as of February 2026, we have added a new tab below called “Park Impacts.” Details on the impacts to Lake Isabella, the Little Miami Scenic River, and the Little Miami Scenic Trail are explained in this section. There is also an opportunity to provide comments on these impacts through March 27, 2026; further information on how to provide comments is also detailed in that section.
If you need any interpretation or translation services or other reasonable accommodations to review these materials, please contact Anthony Pankala, ODOT District 8 Environmental Coordinator, at (513) 933-6640 or Anthony.Pankala@dot.ohio.gov.
The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried-out by ODOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated December 14, 2020 and executed by FHWA and ODOT. PROJECT OVERVIEW
The I-275 SmartLane (HAM/CLE IR 275 30.98/0.00; PID 115417) project corridor is located along the interstate loop, northeast of Cincinnati, Ohio. Eastbound project limits extend 11 miles from US-42 to SR-28 and westbound limits extend 6 miles from SR-28 to Loveland Madeira Road.
The corridor was originally identified in the 2016 ODOT Statewide Active Traffic Demand Management (ATDM) Strategies study as a Hard Shoulder Running (HSR) -- more commonly known as a SmartLane -- candidate to improve safety, travel time, preserve capacity, and reliability. Phase 1 of the I-275 SmartLane (PID 94256) is scheduled to open in late 2023. Phase 2 is under design, including the necessary options to accommodate the SmartLane on the I-275 bridges over Loveland Madeira Road/Railroad Tracks and the Little Miami River. Additionally, the project will add an eastbound auxiliary lane from US-22 to Loveland Madeira Road and is investigating potential interchange improvements on I-275 eastbound from Reed Hartman Highway to I-71.
PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT
