Montopolis Drive safety and mobility needs
Montopolis Drive safety and mobility needs
Home
The City of Austin is making Montopolis Drive safer and easier to use between Riverside Drive and US 183. People in the community asked for safer streets, and the City is using money from the 2020 Mobility Bond and the 2022 Safe Streets and Roads For All grant to pay for these changes.
Safety improvements
May 2026 updates
City crews are fixing sidewalks and upgrading traffic signals along Montopolis Drive. They recently built a new path for people walking and biking between Del Monte Road and the US 183 service road. Before, there was a gap in the network. The City will keep fixing sidewalks in this area.
More work will start this summer. The City will add ramps and curb bump-outs at important intersections like Santos Street, Marigold Terrace, Porter Street, Hogan Avenue, Felix Avenue, Vera Lane and El Mirando Street. Fairway Street, Porter Street, and Ponca Street will get traffic signal upgrades. Porter Street will also get signals that help people with low or no vision safely cross using sounds. Workers will also paint new stop bars and crosswalks.
Community members told the City that the street lights were not working near the US 183 and Montopolis Drive intersection. The City shared this with the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, and the lights were fixed in early December 2025.
While the City continues making short-term safety improvements on Montopolis Drive, it will pause planning for larger changes to the street and nearby side streets so the work can better align with planned future work in the area. The City will begin studying possible options again once future plans are clearer and will reconnect with the community before proposing any major changes to Montopolis Drive.
Previous updates
In May 2025, Austin crews cleared overgrown plants in the 500 block of Montopolis Drive to help people see and get around better. This was done after residents asked for it. You can send more requests to 3-1-1.
Staff asked for ideas in summer 2025 to find ways to make Montopolis Drive safer and easier for everyone traveling there.
