Feedback requested: The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) asks that the public focus its feedback on novel components of the strategy, most notably Chapter 2, which describes demographic objectives and associated criteria for distribution, mortality management, and population-level genetic health of grizzly bears in the Demographic Monitoring Area (DMA) for the Selkirk-Cabinet Yaak (SCY) Area.

Background: At its meeting on July 21, 2026, the Executive Committee approved publication on the IGBC website of a draft Selkirk-Cabinet Yaak Grizzly Bear Conservation Strategy, authorized a 30-day public feedback period on certain aspects of the strategy, and assigned a Conservation Strategy Development Team to review and respond to public feedback. Refer to this IGBC presentation for more information. As with other grizzly bear Conservation Strategies, this document is a compilation of commitments that exist in the plans and regulations of signatory agencies.

Federal land management agency land and resource management plans are subject to their own laws, and regulations and, process for public review and input, so the IGBC is not seeking comments on the description of related federal agency commitments. Ultimately, the states of Idaho, Montana, and Washington will have a Tri-State Memorandum of Agreement describing the individual agency commitments for implementation of demographic objectives and criteria, conflict management, and monitoring. Once the states have approved revisions to the tri-state agreement via their respective state processes, the agreement will be included as Appendix C in conjunction with Conservation Strategy finalization.
