Intergenerational Program Exploration Survey
Intergenerational Program Exploration Survey
The City of Austin is in the process of exploring the possibility of programming across generations (older adults and younger children) called intergenerational programming. Intergenerational programs can enhance the mental and physical health of older adults and reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness. The programs can also increase social development of youth and their perceptions of older adults.
This survey seeks to understand the community’s feeling on a possible program or dedicated site for intergenerational programs or daycare. Your responses will be presented to City Council.
Part 1: Intergenerational Resource and Activity Center
One proposal for intergenerational programming is a dedicated site that serves aging neighbors and children under one roof, sharing space and doing some programs together. This Intergenerational Resource and Activity Center would start by serving up to 50 low-income, older adults (65 and older) and 25 qualifying children (under 5 years old). It could also provide additional opportunities for activities connecting pre-teen or teenage children with older adults. The site would be on public land, developed and operated in partnership with private entities.
Potential Locations
A full-scale intergenerational resource and activity center would require a change in purpose of the possible location. City Council requested us to explore the following locations as potential intergenerational resource and activity center locations:
- The Nash Hernandez Building in Holly Shores/Edward Rendon Sr. Park: An unoccupied building that requires significant rehabilitation and construction. Additional amendments to the Holly Shores/Edward Rendon Sr. Park Vision Plan would be necessary. (District 3, ZIP 78702)
- Mendez Recreation Center: A recreation center that serves all ages. To be a licensed intergenerational resource and activity center, all current recreation programming would be impacted and potentially ended, depending on space and licensing requirements. (District 3, ZIP 78702)
- George Morales Dove Springs Recreation Center: A recreation center that serves all ages. To be a licensed intergenerational resource and activity center, all current recreation programming would be impacted and potentially ended, depending on space and licensing requirements. (District 2, ZIP 78744)
- Dittmar Recreation Center: A recreation center that serves all ages. To be a licensed intergenerational resource and activity center, all current recreation programming would be impacted and potentially ended, depending on space and licensing requirements. (District 2, ZIP 78744)
