Glossary of Terms

Shared use path – A paved path designed for use by both pedestrians and bicyclists, typically separated from the roadway by a buffer such as grass, trees, or curb space.
 

Sidewalk – A paved walkway intended primarily for pedestrians and located alongside a roadway.
 

Service road/service drive/service lane – A smaller road running parallel to the main roadway that provides access to adjacent homes, businesses, or properties.
 

Median – The area separating opposing directions of traffic on a roadway. A median may be paved or landscaped and can include turn lanes, trees, grass, or other features.
