In 2014, Grand Rapids voters established the Vital Streets fund, which dedicates its focus to improving our street conditions. The Garfield Avenue project is funded by Vital Streets. Construction began in June 2026.

Construction began in June 2026
This is a reconstruction project. Contractors will replace the road and upgrade what is listed below:
- Driveway approaches and sidewalks
- Water
- Parkways and street trees
- Storm sewer
- Curb extensions
