The Big Branch Trail project includes the planning and construction of portions of a trail corridor generally running parallel to Big Branch. The corridor will consist of six segments, some with trail facilities that will be designed and constructed as part of this Parks Bond project, some that will utilize trails or sidewalks constructed by other departments or outside entities, some that will utilize existing sidewalks along nearby roads and some where feasibility will be completed as part of this project but further design and construction will occur at an undetermined point in the future.

Current Project Status

The first phase of public outreach for the Big Branch Greenway Connector Project was completed in the fall of 2024. This phase included one in-person project open house, one virtual project open house, one pop-up event and an online survey available for citizen participation between August 1st and September 13th, 2024.

A second phase of public outreach was completed, specifically for segment 1B. This phase included one in-person project open house and an online survey that was available for citizen participation between May 13th and June 11th, 2025.

The project's existing conditions analysis is ongoing. This stage includes, surveying, soil testing, environmental study, right-of-way impact analysis, cost estimating and more. Once the existing conditions analysis is complete, its results, combined with Capital Area Greenway System goals, and feedback received through the project's public outreach efforts, will be used to select recommended alignment options for schematic design. The schematic design phase will include more detailed plans that will show the exact alignment recommended for each segment of the project, including distance to property lines and adjacent buildings and other infrastructure. The schematic design stage anticipated to wrap up in the summer of 2025.
