Provide Input on the Douglas Park Renovation Project - 2nd Engagement
Thank you to everyone who contributed feedback during the initial design phase and again on the final draft design concept for Douglas Park Phase 1. Your input helped inform this final draft design. Through this feedback form, we'll cover key updates, including the new corner entrance, changes to existing paths, and the steps we're taking to protect the park's natural and historical resources.
We'd also like to be upfront about some of these updates and why they have been made. Due to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Public Right of Way Access Guidelines (PROWAG), the project had to make some changes to align access with the guidelines. These changes are noted as you move through the engagement.
Playground renovations are part of Phase 2 of the project. More information will be shared when Phase 1 is complete.
The County is seeking your feedback on the final draft design between now and April 15. Learn more about the project and sign up for email updates on the Douglas Park Renovation Project - Phase 1 webpage. You can also sign up for updates at the end of this form.
What's Included in the Phase 1 Draft Concept
As a refresher, Phase 1 focuses on the north and west portions of the park. Phase 1's goals are to:
- Updating the existing trails to make the park more accessible.
- Making the picnic pavilion large enough for four picnic tables and two grills on the perimiter of the pavillion.
- Adding picnic tables throughout the park for more seating options.
- Upgrading the gravel path that connects the north end of Douglas Park to the new bridge.
- Replacing the wooden bridge.
- Updating the existing maintenance access point at S. Stafford Street to create a formal park entrance with additional park signage.
- Provide stormwater management
- Remove invasive plants.
The project also proposes a Virginia Runoff Reduction Method (VRRM) to meet the stormwater management water quality requirements for this site. The VRRM work includes :
- Protection of a portion of the existing forested natural area.
- Requires the area to remain in a natural, vegetated, unmanaged state.
- Only allows activities that help maintain a desired vegetative community such as removing invasive species, managing forests, hogging bushes, and replanting.
