Provide Feedback on the Kenmore Field Conversion Project
Provide Feedback on the Kenmore Field Conversion Project
The two natural grass fields at Kenmore Middle School are scheduled for conversion to synthetic turf in order to expand play hours through more weather conditions. We are seeking community input on the Kenmore Field Conversion's draft concept design to inform the final draft design, which we will release for community feedback in Fall 2024.
This project is a combined effort that relies on key community partnerships. Arlington County Parks & Recreation is working with Arlington Soccer Association, Arlington Sports Foundation, and Arlington Public Schools to fund this project. We are extremely grateful for our community partners' efforts to improve the user experience at Kenmore Middle School.
Please take a moment to fill out the feedback form below. This online engagement will remain open through August 2, 2024.
Existing Layout and Purpose of the Project
The images below show the current natural grass fields at Kenmore Middle School, which are primarily used for soccer. While these grass fields are currently used often, they are vulnerable to poor weather conditions that cause delays or cancellations. The Kenmore Field Conversion project aims to replace the grass fields with synthetic turf combination fields to allow for more play and durability year-round across various weather conditions. The proposed conversion to turf combination fields will enhance our community's recreational space and increase opportunities for play in multiple sports.
Key Considerations for the Kenmore Field Conversion Project
This project takes into account several considerations to maximize benefits for the community. Some of those considerations include:
- Access and Circulation:
- Improved access from the fields to the existing parking lot.
- Improved access points for visitors along 2nd Street South.
- One major access point that features a donor wall to commemorate partnerships with the Arlington Soccer Association and the Arlington Sports Foundation.
- ADA accessible walkways throughout the site.
- A walking track that also serves as a connection between other amenities at Kenmore.
- Improved User Experience:
- Durable synthetic turf that allows for more playtime for a wider range of sports across different weather conditions. The use of environmentally friendly materials will be evaluated during the design process.
- A dedicated area for spectator seating.
- Batting cages for baseball and softball.
- Improved access to the existing restrooms.
- Lighting:
- Upgrades to existing lighting including LED technology and new light fixtures.
- This is an environmentally responsible and budget-friendly way to enhance use at night.
- Evenly distributed light coverage of the athletic fields with reduced glare and spillage.
- Improved energy efficiency and reduced maintenance needs.
Tree Impacts:
- Preservation of as many existing trees as possible while providing regulation or near-regulation sized fields and considering existing site constraints to include grading, utilities, and other structures.
- The concept aims to mitigate tree impacts, however it is impossible to avoid them completely. At this time, we estimate a loss of approximately 10 trees, but this is subject to change based on additional tree assessments later in the project's design phase.
- Fortunately, there is ample space at the site for new trees. We plan to offset any tree removals with additional tree plantings onsite, as well as the new trees that will be required as a part of the County’s Tree Preservation Ordinance/Replacement Policy.
- Preservation of as many existing trees as possible while providing regulation or near-regulation sized fields and considering existing site constraints to include grading, utilities, and other structures.
- Sports Offered:
- The design lays out two "combination fields" that allow for sports that can be played on both rectangular and diamond fields.
