Welcome!

There are three parts to this public engagement opportunity for the S. Four Mile Run Drive Complete Streets Project:

  1. Project Background and Goals
    • Why this project? Why now? We answer these questions below.
  2. Revised Concept Design
    • See the concept design, it's features and how community feedback informed the design.
  3. Your Feedback on the Concept Design
    • On this page, we have questions for you about your thoughts on the revised design.

This engagement opportunity is open through April 30. Your feedback will help finalize the plan, along with other available information, such as plan guidance and crash data. Implementation for the interim design will begin in Summer/Fall 2023. Thank you for helping improve our projects to better meet your needs!

Project Background

The S. Four Mile Run Drive Complete Streets Project will deliver multimodal safety improvements throughout the corridor in phases. This engagement presents a revised concept design for the section from S. Walter Reed Drive to S. Nelson Street. This project originated through the Master Transportation Plan, community-reported transportation safety concerns, crash data, and the results of the Vision Zero High Injury Network Safety Audit of Four Mile Run Drive.

Phase 2 Project Goals

  • Provide a safe, consistent pathway for people walking in the corridor
  • Reduce motor vehicle speeds along S. Four Mile Run Drive (speeds currently average 10 mph above speed limit)
  • Maintain access to businesses and amenities
  • Maximize the number of parking spaces while still addressing safety concerns

Project Basis

Planning guidance from this project comes from the following County Board-adopted plans and policies

Master Transportation Plan

  • Streets Element: The Complete Street policy informs the scope of this project to improve safety for all road users

Four Mile Run Valley Area Plan

  • The Four Mile Run Valley Area Plan envisions S Four Mile Run Drive as a three-lane roadway (one lane in each direction with a center turn lane) with improved pedestrian zones and crossings.

Vision Zero

Vision Zero policies call on County Transportation staff to take a proactive approach to safety to eliminate severe and fatal crashes from our transportation network by 2030.

  • High Injury Network Corridor 2021: S. Four Mile Run Drive from S. Four Mile Run Drive to Shirlington Road is part of Arlington County’s High Injury Network. These corridors experienced high concentrations of critical crashes compared to other corridors in Arlington.
