Long Branch Stream Valley Trail Improvements
Long Branch Stream Valley Trail Improvements
Overview
The Fairfax County Park Authority is preparing to begin construction on the next phase of improvements to the Long Branch Stream Valley Trail. This project will enhance the trail segment between Woodland Way and Wakefield Chapel Road, with construction anticipated to begin in late June or early July 2025.
Background
This work follows the successful completion of Phase 1, which improved the section of trail from Olley Lane to Woodland Way in 2021. In Phase 2, the contractor, Tibbs Paving, will return to the site to begin active construction. The scope of work includes paving the existing gravel trail and installing new stormwater culverts. Construction activities are expected to continue through the summer, with active work concluding by the end of July 2025, weather permitting.
Construction Impacts
During construction, residents and park users may notice occasional construction traffic entering and exiting the park along Woodland Way and Wakefield Chapel Road. All work will be completed in accordance with the Fairfax County Noise Ordinance. This ordinance allows work to occur from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays, with weekend and holiday work permitted between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., if necessary.
Project Goals
The primary goals of this project are to replace approximately 5,500 linear feet of gravel trail with a more durable asphalt and concrete surface and to upgrade stormwater infrastructure by replacing failed pipes. These improvements will enhance accessibility, safety, and long-term trail sustainability.
Project Milestones
Funding for this phase will be provided by the 2020 Park Bond. Construction is scheduled to begin in early summer 2025 and conclude by the end of the summer.
