Vision Zero Pilot Engagement: Leading Through Intervals (LTIs)
Vision Zero Pilot Engagement: Leading Through Intervals (LTIs)
Have you traveled through the intersections of Wilson Blvd & N Lynn St in Rosslyn or Washington Blvd & 10th St N in Clarendon in the last several months? The Vision Zero team is seeking input from people like you to help inform our review of a new traffic signal timing pattern that aims to reduce crashes between people walking and people driving.
Project Background
Welcome!
There are three parts to this public engagement opportunity for the Vision Zero Leading Through Interval (LTI) Safety Pilot:
- Project Background
- What the Pilot Changed
- Pilot Project Questions
This engagement opportunity is open through June 1. We want to learn from our community members about the impacts of the pedestrian crossing adjustments at the pilot locations. Public feedback and driver yield data will determine whether this treatment is added to our Multimodal Engineering Safety Toolbox.
Thank you for helping improve our projects to better meet your needs!
Pilot Goals
The goal of this pilot was to change the timing of traffic signals for people driving and people walking to reduce the number of conflicts between people crossing the street and people turning across the crosswalk. We are trying this approach to see if we can achieve measurable safety improvements through timing changes, giving us a new, rapidly implementable option for improving safety for all users at signalized intersections.
- Introduce a signal timing strategy to enhance safety and visibility for people walking and biking
- Reduce conflicts between turning vehicles and pedestrians and cyclists.
- Keep straight-moving traffic moving while providing more flexibility for a longer head start for people walking.
Pilot Locations
The pilot locations were chosen due to their geometry and existing dedicated turn lanes, as well as crash histories and high volumes of pedestrian and vehicle activity:
- Wilson Blvd & N Lynn St
- Washington Blvd & 10th St N
