What is the North Knot?
The North Knot is an area in Northwest Columbus where major roads, like Olentangy River Road and SR 315, don't connect well to their surroundings. This causes travel delays for cars, buses, and other modes of transportation.
Previous planning studies have identified this "knot" as an obstacle to the area's growth. Fixing it is crucial for improving traffic flow and supporting future development, including high-capacity transit and new housing and jobs. Addressing the North Knot will require further planning and coordination to find the best solution for better connectivity and access.
Community Importance
The study area serves as a key connection point for surrounding communities and beyond. This area supports a diverse mix of residents, workers, students, and visitors making it an essential hub for education, healthcare, and daily life.
Environmental Importance
The Olentangy River is located within the study area, east of Olentangy River Road. As development continues, future projects must balance the need for improved transportation while considering potential impacts on the river, surrounding natural habitats, and adjacent neighborhoods.
Economic Importance
This study area and corridor play a critical role in Central Ohio's economy. The ongoing development around The Ohio State University, Wexner Medical Center, and new employment centers in the area are driving job growth and attracting investment. Additionally, the Central Ohio Transit Authority's (COTA) Northwest Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line is proposed to be located on Olentangy River Road and will improve connectivity, supporting the workforce and enhancing access to the region’s key economic drivers.
