Public Works crews have worked to restore access to Old Toll Road near the intersection at Sunset Drive, following damage from a landslide during Tropical Storm Helene. As of April 2026, the road has been temporarily reopened. When weather is warmer, the road will be milled and resurfaced. Crews have installed a stormwater pipe to help prevent future damage due to runoff and reduce the risk of erosion.

Background

On September 27, 2024, Tropical Storm Helene brought heavy rainfall and severe weather to Asheville, causing an estimated $1 billion in damage to City-owned property and assets. The storm caused a landslide along Old Toll Road, near the intersection with Sunset Drive. The damage rendered this portion of the road impassable and required extensive repairs to ensure long-term safety and stability.

In March 2025, the City of Asheville’s Public Works Department began a full reconstruction effort. In addition to rebuilding the road, crews are installing infrastructure to improve stormwater drainage and prevent future slope failures.

The City is seeking reimbursement for this recovery project  through the FEMA Public Assistance program and from HMGP to help offset repair costs. This is one of the final road repairs remaining from Helene’s impact, and its completion will mark a significant milestone in Asheville’s long-term storm recovery efforts.
