Coordinated Entry is the system local agencies use to connect individuals and families to shelter and housing opportunities as they become available. When The Landing Place opens, referrals are expected to come through this system.

- Select the option for Coordinated Entry
- Do not select the option for emergency shelter beds
Emergency shelter bed options are used for seasonal winter shelter programs.
WHAT IS THE LANDING PLACE?
The Landing Place is a transitional family shelter designed to serve families with children who are experiencing homelessness. It will provide short-term housing and supportive services to help families move toward stable, permanent housing.
This shelter is being built with a focus on safety, dignity, and the needs of children and parents.

Families will not apply directly. Referrals are expected to come through the Coordinated Entry system once the shelter is ready to open.
Referrals will be coordinated through partner agencies under the existing Coordinated Entry system. More information will be shared closer to opening.

OPERATIONS & SERVICES
The Landing Place will be operated by Family Promise of Southwest Michigan, a local affiliate of the national nonprofit organization Family Promise with decades of experience supporting families experiencing homelessness. Family Promise will operate the 24/7 family shelter using a low-barrier, trauma-informed, and housing-focused approach, creating more than 20 local jobs, further strengthening the community impact of this investment.

Initial Funding Secured

Funding was committed to support the purchase of the property, renovations, and startup costs for a transitional family shelter.

Property Purchased
February 2025
The Board of Commissioners approved a purchase agreement of $5.65 million for the former Country Inn & Suites, located within the City of Kalamazoo at 1912 E. Kilgore Service Rd.
RFP Released for Programs & Services
March 2025
The County released a request for proposals to identify an experienced organization to operate programs and services at the shelter.
Services must be trauma-informed, culturally competent, and designed to support families in transitioning from temporary shelter to long-term housing stability.
The Landing Place Announced
April 2025
Kalamazoo County introduced "The Landing Place" as the official name and identity for the transitional family shelter.

Initial Building Improvements
Spring–Summer 2025
Following the purchase of the property, the County completed essential building upgrades to stabilize the site and prepare for future renovations.
These improvements included a new roof and upgrades to HVAC and related building systems.
Construction & Service Contracts Approved
October 2025
The Board of Commissioners approved contracts to move The Landing Place toward opening, including construction work to complete renovations and a service contract to operate the shelter.
$1.38 million awarded to Cornerstone Construction, focusing on major enhancements, including an upgraded kitchen and dining area and a dedicated indoor recreation and childcare space.
$10.8 million awarded to Family Promise, a national nonprofit, to operate the 24/7 family shelter over the next three years, creating more than 20 local jobs.
Philanthropic Support Committed
December 2025
As part of a broader $23.3 million philanthropic investment supporting the County's "Keys to Kalamazoo" Housing Framework, funding was committed to support The Landing Place:
- $700,000 for construction gap needs
- $11,000,000 for operations and wraparound services
Final Construction Underway

Construction is underway to complete family-centered spaces and prepare the facility for safe, code-compliant operations.
