Albemarle Park
Albemarle Park
Albemarle Park, formerly Albemarle Road Park, is a local park in the South Park Region of Mecklenburg County. The entrance to Albemarle Park is off W.T. Harris Blvd. just south of Albemarle Road. Albemarle Park is approximately 21 acres of predominately wooded land with walking trails that is surrounded by Albemarle Road Elementary School, Albemarle Road Middle School and the Albemarle Road Recreation Center. Albemarle Park and the recreation center are divided by a major road, W.T. Harris Blvd. The Albemarle Road Recreation Center features a full-size gymnasium, multipurpose rooms, a kitchen, a meeting room, a nature trail, a multipurpose field and a playground.
Mecklenburg County is working to make improvements to Albemarle Park. The Albemarle Park Project is for the site master planning and phase 1 designing and rebuilding of the park. The master planning process aimed to identify community needs, wants, desires for the park; identify users interested in enjoying the park, develop a plan for implementation that would improve perception, safety, access, visibility and usability of the park. On November 14, 2020, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation conducted a virtual public meeting to seek community input to help define the master plan. The Mecklenburg County Board of County Commissioners allocated $7 million to the improvement of existing local parks in an effort to improve equity. Albemarle Park is one of the ten parks selected to receive this funding.
Phase 1 of construction will include grading, trails, a boardwalk and site furnishings, wayfinding, a playground, fitness equipment, a small picnic shelter and a basketball court. Other park amenities in the master plan, such as the community garden will be completed in the future pending funding availability.
