Henry Clay Elementary School and John M. Gandy Elementary School are officially closed with the opening of the new Ashland Elementary School.

  • Henry Clay remains a structure
    • Oct. 8, 2024: Hanover County School Board voted to surplus their 5 parcels of land; effective Nov. 13, 2024
      • Nov. 13, 2024: Hanover County Board of Supervisors to consider accepting the surplus parcels 

 

  • County ownership would include the existing school, gym, ballfields and miscellaneous outbuildings as well as a deed for the War Memorial.

 

  • Hanover County Public Schools provided a study that was completed on May 24, 2018.
    • Shows all structures combined at 78,783 sq. ft.
    • 2018: $22M in renovation costs (if it were to remain a school)

 

Next Steps:

  • In addition to taking ownership of the structures, Hanover County will continue to work with the current users to make sure their needs are met.
  • In early 2025, the County will begin a series of community meetings to gather feedback from our citizens on what they would like to see happen to the site.
    • Repurpose the site(s) for another use
    • Renovate the site
    • Demo the site(s) and use for other County uses or facilities
    • Sell the site(s)
  • Spring/Summer
    • Provide feedback and recommendations to the Facility Committee
    • Ultimately present feedback and recommendations to the Board of Supervisors
