Natural surface trails are trails made by clearing and grading the native soil, with no added surfacing material. Examples of natural surface trails can be found in Arlington County at Glencarlyn Park, Donaldson Run Trail, and the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail.

Arlington County has over 20 miles of natural surface trails, but it can be challenging to ensure trail sustainability where trails can be easily maintained without harming the environment around them.
