Project Background
The S. George Mason Drive Multimodal Transportation Study (2023) asked residents what improvements mattered most along the corridor. The community’s top priorities were dedicated bikeways, sidewalks, and vehicle travel lanes.
Building on that feedback, this capital project advances the study’s preferred cross-section for this segment, which delivers safer, more comfortable options for people walking, biking, rolling, taking transit, and driving.
Project Goals
Construct a 12‑foot‑wide multiuse trail on the east side to support walking, biking, and rolling.
- Widen the west side sidewalk from 4 feet to 7 feet to provide a more comfortable pedestrian experience.
- Upgrade intersections with ADA‑compliant curb ramps, curb extensions, high‑visibility crosswalks, and pedestrian refuge areas in medians.
- Enhance visibility and reduce crossing distances to support safer travel for all ages and abilities.
More information about the project's origin, basis and history can be found on the project webpage.

Project Location
This segment of S. George Mason Drive between Arlington Boulevard (US Route 50) and Columbia Pike is located in between the Barcroft and Alcova Heights neighborhoods, and serves as a major north-south corridor for residents and visitors between north and south Arlington. It is adjacent to two major federal facilities as well as the Alcova Heights park, and links to one of the County's major commercial corridors, along with thousands of homes.
This segment of the George Mason Drive corridor currently features two general travel lanes in each direction, with narrow sidewalks and a center median. The outside lane in each direction features shared lane markings, but there is no existing space dedicated to bicycle or micromobility use. Transit service along the corridor is provided by WMATA's A71 MetroBus route and the ART 72 route.
