- What is a Comprehensive Plan?
A Comprehensive Plan is a document which focuses on immediate and long-term actions for growth and development, protection, and enhancement of a community. The plan includes goals, and strategies to achieve those goals. The comprehensive plan also provides for a legal basis for zoning changes in accordance with the Comprehensive Plan.
- Why is the Town doing a Comprehensive Plan?
The current Comprehensive Plan is more than 50 years old, and no longer reflects the challenges and opportunities the Town of Smithtown faces today, or will in the future. Changes to demographics, development trends, technology, laws, and many other factors have affected how people live, work, travel, and play in our community. As a result, we need a new Plan that reflects these new realities and plans for the Town's future growth and development.
- What will be included in the new Comprehensive Plan?
The Plan will consist of new Goals and Objectives, a Land Use Plan, a Transportation Plan, a special Parking Plan, a Communitie Facilities Plan, a Sustainability Plan, and a Capital Improvements Plan. In addition, Community Plans will be developed for each of the Town's hamlets - Commack, Hauppauge, Kings Park, Nesconset, Smithtown, and St. James.
- When will the report be completed?
It is expected the Comprehensive Plan will be complete in mid-2020 contigent on the environmental review process.
- How can I participate?
You can provide valuable insight into the Comprehensive Plan by completing the survey questions on this webpage and participating at upcoming community workshops. And help spread the word by sharing on social media and telling your friends and family about what we are doing!
- I have comments I would like to submit for the Comprehensive Plan. Who do I send them to?
You can email them to [email protected].
