Speed Cushion Pilot Project Ending Survey
Speed Cushion Pilot Project Ending Survey
The South State Street Speed Cushion Pilot project has come to an end.
In our attempt to continually research new treatment types and best practices, city staff installed modular speed cushions at 2 strategic locations along South State Street between E. Lenoir St and Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. The modular speed cushions worked well as a traffic calming treatment but the durability was not up to our standards. One of the modular speed cushions was damaged and needed to be removed. Originally, this pilot project was scheduled to run through October 2021, but with the removal of the modular speed cushion the pilot project has come to an end.
Project Results:
828 South State Street
Pre-pilot driver speeds: 31.24 mph in the 25 mph zone
Pilot driver speeds: 25.59 mph in the 25 mph zone
717 South State Street
Pre-pilot driver speeds: 32.83 mph in the 25 mph zone
Pilot driver speeds: 25.19 mph in the 25 mph zone
The modular speed cushions slowed drivers down to the speed limit with an average reduction in driver speed of 20.75% from their pre-pilot driving speeds. This section of road was chosen due to the documented speed compliance issues and as you can see from the results, there was a positive impact on driver speeds while the modular speed cushions were in place.
We want to hear from you!
With the pilot period ending, we want to hear from you and about your experience having traffic calming on your street. Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have, as well as make any comments about the modular speed cushions that you experienced.
Once this open comment period closes, all residents along South State Street will receive a mailed ballot asking them if they would like permanent asphalt speed humps installed to replace the modular speed cushions.
Thank you for working with us during the Modular Speed Cushion Pilot project and we look forward to hearing from you!
