Project Overview
The City of Fife Comprehensive Plan is intended to provide the community’s decision makers with guidelines regarding issues affecting the future shape, character, and form of the City. Currently, city staff are working on the 2024-2044 Periodic Update, which is to be adopted in December of 2024.
As part of this process, the City of Fife is conducting an environmental analysis, and our first ever climate change analysis, to serve as a baseline for the Environmental element of the comprehensive plan. This element is dedicated to understanding the current state of the city in relation to the environment, as well as documenting where we are vulnerable to climate change and its associated impacts and provide guidance for future development. Some components of this element include a critical areas inventory, a greenhouse gas analysis, and a climate change vulnerability assessment related to sea level rise and riverine flooding.
Fife is no stranger to the effects of the environment. From the Hylebos flooding of 2003, the flooding of the Puyallup in 2009, to the flooding in your own backyard- everyone in Fife is experiencing the effects of climate change. This affects residents, visitors, and our local businesses alike.
These studies are critical to understanding where city infrastructure needs to be improved, and how the city can continue to grow in a way that is best for residents today, as well as tomorrow. This work will be supported by other planning efforts to be undertaken the following year in 2025, guided in part by the analysis being done for the periodic update, and guidance received from residents during this process.
This webpage is a part of the climate change vulnerability assessment being done to determine Fife's vulnerability to these effects and develop policies to mitigate these vulnerabilities for residents and visitors alike.
Want to get involved? We'd love to hear from you! We hosted an Environmental Element Open House on Thursday, April 4th, 2024, from 4-6PM at the Fife Community Center, Rooms 1-2. Fife Community Center is located at 2111 54th Ave E, Fife WA 98424. At this event, Fife staff reported about our ongoing work on the periodic update, and connected with meeting participants on their shared experiences with climate change here in Fife. There were activities, staff present to answer questions, and the opportunity for meeting participants to share their experiences and help shape environmental policies for the city.
