The City of Austin seeks your feedback on proposed Code amendments that would require bedroom windows in future building projects. A September 2023 resolution by the Austin City Council initiated Code amendments to require access to natural light for all sleeping rooms in new buildings.

The resolution included proposed language for the Code amendments and directed the City Manager to bring a proposed ordinance to Council before August 2024. To fulfill this Council direction, DSD is working to incorporate new requirements into the City’s 2021 Technical Codes as quickly as possible, with plans to return proposed Code amendments to Council in April 2024. The new requirements also will be included in amendments to 2024 Technical Codes later this year.

This page provides information about the proposed amendments and an opportunity to provide input. Comments on this page will close March 1, 2024. Stakeholders also will have an opportunity to learn more about the proposed amendments during the following engagements:
