ABOUT THE PROJECT TAB

The purpose of the project is to accommodate future traffic volumes and address safety issues on Van Dyke Road from Suncoast Parkway to east of Whirley Road. The study will identify and evaluate potential improvements to Van Dyke Road from Gunn Highway to east of Whirley Road, as shown on the map below. The total project length is 3.47 miles.

Safe mobility for all roadway users, regardless of mode of travel, was considered and incorporated into the study and the alternatives were evaluated. Alternatives were generated based on the results of traffic analysis and feedback provided by the community. Based on previous feedback received, these alternatives may include:

  • Widening to provide additional through-lane capacity between the Suncoast Parkway and Dale Mabry Highway

  • Access management improvements to incorporate turn lanes onto side streets

  • Alternative intersection configurations, including roundabouts

  • Improved pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, including multi-use trails, a connected multi-use trail system from the Upper Tampa Bay Trail and the Northdale Lake Park Trail, multi-use trail crossing, etc

  • Moderating travel speeds to improve safety through reduced lane widths, lane deflections, landscaping, and context-based roadway treatments, etc
