Tingen Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Crossing Feasibility Study
Tingen Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Crossing Feasibility Study
The Tingen Road crossing of CSX railroad is required to be permanently closed under the Town's Corridor Master Agreement with CSX and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) once the Apex Peakway Southwest Connector Bridge is open to traffic in 2027. In order to plan for the possibility of future bicycle and pedestrian connectivity across the railroad tracks in this location, a feasibility study is underway to evaluate crossing (bridge or tunnel) design options and select a preferred alternative. The feasibility study will provide information so the Town can make a decision about whether or not to move forward with final design plans and pursue construction funding.
Project Purpose
The proposed bicycle and pedestrian grade-separated crossing is intended to replace the existing Tingen Road at-grade vehicular crossing to maintain north-south connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians across the S-line between Apex Peakway to the southwest and NC 55 (Williams Street) to the northeast. Both bridge and tunnel options are being evaluated. CSX staff have explained in prior coordination efforts that an at-grade Z-gate crossing, similar to the pedestrian crossing between Center Street and Hunter Street, would not be allowable without additional crossing closures.
Study Area
The study area includes parcels adjacent to the segment of Tingen Road that crosses the railway tracks. Prominent design constraints include the CSX S-line railroad and a Town of Apex water tank site.
