OVERVIEW (Road Widening Project - Ended August 2025)

We will widen 9000 South between Redwood Road and 700 West, in West Jordan and Sandy, by adding a new eastbound and westbound lane, a buffered bicycle lane, and continuous sidewalks throughout the corridor. Additionally, 9000 South will be repaved between 700 West and State Street. The project began July 5, 2023.

9000 South is a major east-west road that connects the growing communities in western Salt Lake Valley with I-15 and the eastern parts of the valley. This connection is leading to heavy congestion on 9000 South, and this congestion will continue to worsen. In addition, the exiting 9000 South roadway has insufficient shoulders and sidewalks and lacks bicycle facilities.

The project is intended to improve local east-west traffic performance by reducing intersection congestion and average vehicle delay while improving travel mode choices and safety on 9000 South. These improvements seek to decrease the crash rates along the corridor and improve travel mode choices and enhance safety for active transportation users – including adding buffered bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the roadway.

During the project, crews will strive to minimize the impacts to utility services and impacts to existing homes and businesses. Our Public Involvement team is actively communicating with area businesses and residents on construction schedules, potential impacts, and other inquiries.

ANTICIPATED IMPACTS

We will work to minimize impacts to neighboring residences, business, and the motoring public; however, it is likely the following impacts can be expected near/in the work zone:

  • Noise from construction activities, to include some overnight activity
  • Increase in vibration
  • Increase in dust - dust mitigation efforts will be used
  • Traffic delays due to lane restrictions and signal work

Work zones can be unpredictable. Motorists are encouraged to reduce speed and watch for changing traffic patterns, lane restrictions, and workers in the roadway.

PROJECT OVERVIEW (700 West to Redwood Road)

This project will include the following scope:

  • Widen 9000 South to a 7-lane section from Redwood Road to 700 West
  • Replace the bridge over the Jordan River
  • Extend and create buffered bicycle lanes from Redwood Road to the Jordan River
  • Continuous sidewalks throughout the entire corridor
  • Left turn lane improvements on the north leg of 700 West

BENEFITS

  • Optimize mobility by increasing capacity from 5 to 7 lanes
  • Preserve infrastructure by replacing the bridge over the Jordan River
  • Promote active transportation by extending the bicycle lanes from Redwood Road to the Jordan River Trail
  • Added safety for bicyclists through buffered bicycle lanes along 9000 South
  • Added safety for pedestrians by completing missing sidewalk sections

PROJECT OVERVIEW (700 West to State Street)

This project will include the following scope:

  • Improved left turn lane on the north leg of 700 West (in partnership with Sandy City)
  • Remove and replace the asphalt on 9000 South from 700 West to State Street

BENEFITS

  • Preserve infrastructure by replacing the pavement from 700 West to State Street
  • Optimize mobility by increasing capacity for left turn movements southbound on 700 West

1075 West Signal Update

During the June 28, 2023 open house for the 9000 South Improved project, we received requests to install a traffic signal at the intersection of 1075 West 9000 South. As part of the follow-up from these discussions, the project team reviewed all four (4) prior studies completed at this location within the past ten years (most recent March 2023). All of these studies indicated a traffic signal is not warranted.

We are committed to safety! We will continue to monitor the intersection to determine if the intersection warrants a traffic signal. The next study will be within the next two to three years once the construction is completed on 9000 South.
