At this point in the process, you\u2019re probably just looking to identify the top three or four options.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p><strong>Ranking<\/strong>\u00a0is a better option when you\u2019re working with\u00a0<strong>less than four or five options<\/strong>, and you want to identify the most preferred option.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>For example, let\u2019s say you\u2019re building a new park. You want to understand what features the community wants, but you don\u2019t know how many features you can fund. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to consider the information you want as you\u2019re creating your engagement questions. When it comes to data, the more complex the equation, the more difficult it is to derive clear meaning.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>In this case,\u00a0<strong>Select Multiple Options<\/strong>\u00a0is a simpler equation:\u00a0<strong>More votes = more popular<\/strong>.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p><strong>Ranking<\/strong>\u00a0is more complex. Ranking measures both the\u00a0<strong>number of votes<\/strong>\u00a0for each option, and the\u00a0<strong>priority level<\/strong>\u00a0of each option. It received six (or 35%). The second ranked option (UN Blue) received only seven votes (or 41%); the third ranked option (Orange-Red) received 12 (or 71%).<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>Why did options with fewer votes get ranked so highly? The two highest-ranked options got a high enough average ranking (ranked first or second more frequently) to offset the lower number of votes they received.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>Even though\u00a0<strong>fewer total<\/strong>\u00a0participants overall chose these options, those who did felt very strongly that they should be highly ranked.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p>That\u2019s why, if you\u2019re trying to narrow down a list of options, ranking may not produce the simple data (options with the most votes) that you\u2019re hoping for.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p><strong>Ranking<\/strong>\u00a0questions are most effective when you\u2019ve already narrowed down a large list of options to a smaller list, and you\u2019re trying to identify highest
