Welcome!

There are three parts to this public engagement opportunity for the NCS S. Irving Street project:

  1. Project Background and Goals
    • Why this project? Why now? We answer these questions below.
  2. Concept Design
    • See the concept design and its features.
  3. Your Feedback on the Concept Design
    • On this page, we have questions for you about your thoughts on the revised design.

This engagement opportunity is open through May 25. Your feedback will help finalize the plan, along with other available information, such as plan guidance and crash data. The Neighborhood Complete Streets Commission will consider the community-informed plans at their Funding Hearing in the in Spring/Fall 2023. Thank you for helping improve our projects to better meet your needs!

Project Background

This location was nominated for Neighborhood Complete Streets (NCS) funding consideration. It ranked highly on the scored list of nominated streets, with points awarded due to obstructions in the existing sidewalk and proximity to schools, transit and the Colombia Pike corridor. The Neighborhood Complete Streets Commission (NCSC) affirmed pursuance of a concept design and public engagement at their February 27, 2023 meeting.

Existing Conditions

  • Sidewalk on the east side of the street is obstructed by utility poles
  • Sidewalk on the west side of the street is obstructed by streetlights
  • There is on-street parking on both sides of the street

Project Goal

  • Provide an accessible, unobstructed sidewalk for people walking on South Irving Street between 2nd Street South and 6th Street South
  • Connect to planned installation of new sidewalk on South Irving Street between 6th Street South and 7th Street South

Both proposed concepts provide an accessible, unobstructed sidewalk for people walking along S. Irving Street.

Project Basis

Planning guidance from this project comes from the following County Board-adopted plans and policies

    • It began with an application received from the Arlington community, which scored highly on an objective criteria matrix and was recommended by the Neighborhood Complete Streets Commission (NCSC)
