Pedestrian Crossing Upgrades - Twelve Locations 2026-2027
The City is investing in enhanced pedestrian crossings starting in June 2026 and continuing through early 2027 at the following 12 locations. These locations were targeted to support pedestrian safety and access at crossings that serve various places and services like schools, parks, transit stops, business districts, and bikeways and trails. Construction at pedestrian crossings near schools will occur this summer while school is not in session. All locations should be completed by Spring 2027.

Pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacon (RFB) crossing on the north side on Alpine at the intersection with 11th St. This crossing is adjacent to Rapid bus stops and a church and along the planned Neighborhood Bikeway on 11th St. Curb extensions will also be constructed on all four intersection corners to shorten the crossings and improve visibility.
Pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacon (RFB) crossing on the east side of Ann at the intersection with Lafayette. This crossing is adjacent to Palmer Elementary School and is near City Middle/High School and local businesses on Plainfield.
Pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacon (RFB) crossing on the west side of Burton at the intersection with Nelson. This crossing is adjacent to local businesses and serves Rapid bus stops in the Southtown area.
Pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacon (RFB) crossing on the north side of Chavez at the intersection with Cordelia. This crossing is adjacent to local businesses, serves Rapid bus stops and is near a park and school.
Pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacon (RFB) crossing on the south side of Chavez at the intersection with Cordelia. This crossing is adjacent to local businesses in the Chavez Avenue business district, serves Rapid bus stops, and is near a park and school.
Pedestrian-activated “hybrid” beacon (PHB) crossing on the north side of Fuller at the intersection with Lyon St to the west and a trail to the east. This crossing is adjacent to Fuller Park and provides access between the Midtown and Fulton Heights neighborhoods and will serve a future Neighborhood Bikeway on Lyon Street.

Pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacon (RFB) crossing on the west side of Leonard at the intersection with Northfield. This crossing is adjacent to local businesses and apartments and serves Rapid bus stops.
Pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacon (RFB) crossing on the east side of Michigan at the intersection with Grand. This crossing is adjacent to local businesses and apartments in the Michigan Street business district and serves Rapid bus stops.
Pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacon (RFB) crossing on the east side of Michigan at the intersection with Houseman. This crossing is adjacent to local businesses in the Michigan Street business district and serves Rapid bus stops.
Pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacon (RFB) crossing on the east side of Robinson at the intersection with Norwood. This crossing is adjacent to Wilcox Park and is near a school and Aquinas College in the Eastown neighborhood.
Pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacon (RFB) crossings on both the east and west sides of Wealthy at the intersection with Henry. This crossing serves MLK Academy School and Rapid bus stops. It is also adjacent to local businesses in Wealthy Street business district.
How are these pedestrian crossing beacons being funded?
City staff obtained several federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) grants to support these projects. This federal traffic safety grant program provides 90% of project construction costs.
The City’s voter-approved local income tax-supported Vital Streets program and Mobile GR department funding cover the required 10% grant match plus the project design and construction management, inspection and administration costs.
