Falls Of Neuse Widening
I-540 to Durant Road
Raleigh
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing to Widen Falls of Neuse Road between I-540 and Durant Road in Raleigh. The proposal would improve Falls of Neuse Road from the current five-lane undivided roadway to a six-lane median-divided roadway. The purpose of the project is to improve traffic operations along Falls of Neuse Road.
Two alternatives were presented at the open house public meeting held in August of 2017:
- Alternative 1
Widen Falls of Neuse primarily on the west side of the existing roadway.
- Alternative 2
Widen Falls of Neuse primarily on the east side of the existing roadway.
RECOMMENDED ALTERNATIVE SELECTED
After review of all comments received at the public meetings and throughout the comment period which concluded on September 27, 2017, a recommended alternative was selected for more detailed design work. Alternative 2 was selected as the recommended alternative.
Alternative 2 selected as Recommended Alternative
minimizes the potential impacts on residential properties on the west side of Falls of Neuse including potential impacts to septic drain fields;
avoids major relocation of the Duke Energy power distribution line along the west side of Falls of Neuse;
has similar impacts to Alternative 1 with respect to business parking along the east side of Falls of Neuse; and
meets the congestion and safety improvement goals of the project.
MODIFICATION OF RECOMMENDED ALTERNATIVE
Following discussions with the City of Raleigh, additional modifications to the recommended alternative were made. A 'best-fit' widening alternative was developed.
A map of the Recommended Alternative is available here: https://www.ncdot.gov/news/public-meetings/Documents/U-5826_rdy_phm_09_28_18.pdf

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
