I-5870: I-440 at Glenwood Avenue
I-5870: I-440 at Glenwood Avenue
The Glenwood Avenue interchange on I-440 was originally built in the 1960s, upgraded in the early 1990s and cannot handle the volume of traffic that uses it today. That volume is projected to grow substantially as Raleigh continues to grow in the coming years. The operational and safety issues we are currently experiencing have led to a project that includes the I-440/Glenwood Avenue interchange, the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Blue Ridge/Lead Mine Roads, the I-440/Ridge Road interchange, as well as the replacement of the bridge on Blue Ridge Road over Crabtree Creek.
This public engagement platform is intended to provide an opportunity for interested citizens to provide input on the project and questions will be updated frequently throughout the planning process.
The official NCDOT website for the project can be found here: https://www.ncdot.gov/i-440-glenwood/Pages/default.aspx
This project will be reprioritized for funding in the next State Transportation Improvement Program. A schedule for right of way, utilities and/or construction has not been finalized at this time. However, preliminary engineering activities (design, planning, studies) needed for project development are underway.
Study Area Map
The study area is a geographical area in which information on Human and Natural Environmental features are gathered during the preliminary planning process.
Project Status
Studies are underway on a recommended project for I-440/U.S. 1 that would address congestion and safety concerns at both the I-440/Glenwood Avenue interchange and the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Blue Ridge/Lead Mine roads.
Proposed work would also include replacing Bridge 494, which carries Blue Ridge Road over Crabtree Creek. Studies are also looking at ways to improve bicycle and pedestrian connections in the area as well as ways to address traffic operations in the Crabtree Valley Mall area.
In addition, NCDOT will study the Ridge Road/I-440 interchange for potential improvements. Changes to Ridge Road, however, are not part of the project.
