Project Description

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to make improvements along U.S. 258 from Colonial Road (S.R. 1601) to U.S. 64 in Tarboro, to improve capacity in the northern project area and improve safety and mobility for vehicle and multimodal traffic. Specific improvements vary along the corridor but include additional lanes and medians, intersection improvements, multimodal accommodations, and replacement of the overpass bridge at the U.S.258/U.S. 64 interchange.

Although the existing overpass is safe for traffic, the bridge has been deemed structurally deficient based on routine inspection scores as it approaches the end of its functional life. Replacement is necessary when maintenance is no longer cost efficient. The project proposes to construct a new bridge to the west of the existing bridge, allowing traffic to continue to use the existing bridge during construction. The proposed bridge would have a higher vertical clearance than the existing bridge, would allow for future widening of U.S. 64, and would support the future upgrade of U.S. 64 to Interstate standards to become I-87.

Project Highlights

The project proposes to:

  • Realign the intersections of U.S 258 with Colonial Road and St. James Street (southern intersection) to create T-intersections
  • Install sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides of U.S. 258 from St. James Street (southern intersection) to U.S. 64
  • Construct additional lanes, medians and intersection improvements on U.S. 258 from St. James Street (southern intersection) and U.S. 64
  • Replace the bridge on U.S. 258 over U.S. 64
  • Add sidewalk along the east side of U.S. 64 ALT (Western Boulevard) between U.S. 64 and St. James Street (northern intersection)

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
