Design Updates for Segment A and B
Since the Public Hearing in mid-2023, NCDOT has continued ongoing coordination with the Town of Wake Forest and City of Raleigh to refine the project designs. Segments A and B (from I-540 to north of Burlington Mills Road) are currently in the final design process and right-of-way acquisition has begun. Segments C and D are expected to enter the final design phase later this year.
Several design revisions have occurred as part of the ongoing coordination efforts, most notably, the Burlington Mills Road interchange configuration. Other updates have also occurred, such as shifted alignments and driveways, intersection adjustments, and utility and drainage easements.
Burlington Mills Road
NCDOT previously recommended a diamond interchange concept at Burlington Mills Road and U.S. 1 (Capital Boulevard). Ongoing coordination with the Town of Wake Forest determined that a revised interchange layout would be preferable which resulted in the currently proposed partial cloverleaf design. Access to all directions along Burlington Mills Road and U.S. 1 (Capital Boulevard) will be provided.
As part of this public involvement period, NCDOT is requesting your feedback specifically on the new Burlington Mills Road interchange design. RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
