5th St Interchange Study
5th St Interchange Study
The purpose of this study is to identify project recommendations for the existing tight diamond interchange at 5th St. – I 64 (Exit 120) in Albemarle County to reduce congestion, address the high crash volumes on 5th Street through the interchange, and on the EB off ramp from I-64, and to provide facilities for Bicycles and Pedestrian on 5th St through the interchange.
Traffic volumes have increased significantly for the movement exiting EB I-64 and turning left onto 5th Street, causing queueing along the ramp and leading to a high number of rear-end crashes. There are also a high number of rear-end and angle crashes along 5th Street in both directions due to the congestion along the corridor and the number of crossing conflicts at each signalized ramp terminal. In addition, there is a growing amount of Bicycle and Pedestrian facilities on 5th St. both north and south of the interchange without a connection across the interstate.
The VTRANS needs for this Interchange are listed as Intersection Safety, Congestion Mitigation, Bicycle, Pedestrian and Transit Access, Pedestrian Safety Improvements, and Transportation Mobility Management.
The study is focusing on improving the interchange operations, safety and enhancing multimodal accessibility and connectivity for pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users. The project recommendations will be developed into funding applications for SMART SCALE Round 6 and other transportation funding programs.
