West Duwamish Wet Weather Storage Facility
West Duwamish Wet Weather Storage Facility
Help shape fencing panel art for the West Duwamish Wet Weather Storage Facility project by responding to this survey before January 26, 2024.
About the project
King County will build a 1.25-million-gallon underground storage tank on the west side of the First Avenue Bridge to reduce sewage and stormwater overflows into the Duwamish River during large storms. Water stored in the West Duwamish Wet Weather Facility will flow to the West Point Treatment Plant for cleaning before it is safely released into the Puget Sound. To learn more about the project, visit the project website.
Help shape the facility’s public appearance by sharing your perspectives about the Duwamish River valley! Seattle artist Ann Marie Schneider will design the fencing panel art on the new facility, and your input will help to inform her design. We would love to learn how you see this dynamic river valley landscape can be integrated into the facility fencing appearance to reflect our commitment to stewardship in concert with the resiliency of our river.
The Duwamish River is Seattle’s only river. At one time, it meandered across lush tidal marshes and mudflats to provide an ideal habitat for fish, birds, and wildlife and was home to the Coast Salish Tribes. After more than a century of channeling, straightening, and industry, it is now home to several residential, diverse, and growing communities such as Highland Park and South Park. It is also an Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Superfund Site with extensive remediation plans. Change is happening, and this project is part of this change by supporting the health of the Duwamish River and its surrounding communities.
