Guardrail Inventory and Upgrade
Guardrail Inventory and Upgrade
This project will prepare an inventory by evaluating existing guardrail segments, end terminals, and associated hardware along several routes in Central Region for damage and adherence to current DOT&PF and FHWA standards. The results of the inventory will be used to design and construct installation or updates to guardrail segments found to be in non-conformance with State and Federal standards.
Project overview presentation
CURRENT STATUS
Crews inspected approximately 430 guardrail systems within the Kenai Peninsula Borough during the 2020 spring and summer. Findings indicate that roughly half of these systems fail to meet current State and Federal standards and require upgrades, while the other half need routine maintenance. Environmentally sensitive areas, including the location of wetlands and bald eagle nests, were also identified as a part of the 2020 field work. In winter and spring 2021, survey crews are completing field work to support the preparation of bid-ready engineering construction documents.
Pending funding availability, construction is likely to start in 2023, or possibly 2022 if the schedule is accelerated.
