This project is included in the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP)
as Project Number U-4739
Planning and development are underway on a proposed project to widen approximately 2.6 miles of Amboy and Meadow roads in Asheville to a modernized roadway between I-240 and N.C. 81 (Biltmore Avenue). The project would also include construction of a bridge over the French Broad River in Asheville, Buncombe County.
Proposed improvements include upgrading the intersections and incorporating multimodal elements such as bicycle lanes and sidewalks. A raised median will be added to improve access management where feasible. Constraints within the corridor that will influence design include railroad right of way, natural resources, public park land, and terrain.
Purpose and Need:
The Amboy Road/Meadow Road corridor is classified as a Minor Arterial with posted speed limits varying from 35 MPH to 45 MPH. Proposed improvements include upgrading the intersections as well as installing bicycle lanes and possibly sidewalks. A raised median will be added to improve access management and possible center turn lanes where feasible. Constraints within the corridor that will influence design include railroad right of way, natural resources, public park land, and terrain.
The proposed project would improve traffic flow and safety on Amboy Road and Meadow Road in the area.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
