Help Apex Get Ready for Rail
The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Integrated Mobility Division is leading a transit-oriented development planning initiative for seven communities (Apex, Franklinton, Henderson, Norlina, Raleigh, Sanford, Wake Forest and Youngsville) on a 95-mile-long section of the S-Line rail corridor.
This segment of the S-Line is a missing link within the larger vision for passenger rail service in the southeast. To better prepare communities in the area for potential future rail service, this study is evaluating potential transit-oriented development opportunities in those seven communities.
S-Line Workshop at Apex Town Hall
Drop in and help designers generate ideas for the S-Line during the design workshops on June 9th from 1-4 pm, or stop by to view results from the day at the open house from 5:30 - 7 pm. Both input opportunities will be hosted at Apex Town Hall (73 Hunter Street) on the 3rd floor.

Water Utility Construction Project: Kelly Road
Now through October, portions of Kelly Road from Olive Chapel Road to Apex Barbecue Road will be partially closed (down to one lane, instead of two) for construction of the Western Transmission Main project.
The Western Transmission Main Project involves installation of 24-inch waterline along Kelly Road. This provides a larger transmission waterline from our connection with the Town of Cary’s water system and extends it to the Tingen Road water tank. Construction of the project includes erosion control measures, select tree removal, and pipe installation. Tree removal was carefully considered on a tree-by-tree basis and decided on based on tree health and absolute necessity for the project. Many trees being removed will be rehomed to other areas in Apex.
Construction is expected to end in October, but is dependent on weather and/or any issues that arise during construction.

All Way Stop Study Scheduled to Begin in Early July
As part of our Downtown Plan implementation, town staff is working with an engineering consultant and NCDOT staff to explore options for redesigning the intersection of Salem Street and Chatham Street in downtown Apex.
NCDOT recommends studying the intersection to see how it would function as an all-way stop (using stop signs on all four corners, rather than using a signal to control traffic at the intersection). This study will begin in early July, and run for approximately 30 days. Note: This study had previously been scheduled to begin June 7th.
During this 30-day period, the way you move through this intersection will change:
- Every vehicle must come to a complete stop before continuing through the intersection.
- Drivers must yield to any pedestrians that are crossing the intersection. (The existing pedestrian crosswalk signals will be covered, since they will not be operating during the test period.)
Once the study has kicked off, we encourage you to provide feedback on how you observe the operation of this intersection as a driver and/or pedestrian.
Road Maintenance Map
The town maintains over 225 miles of roadway, most of which is located in residential subdivisions. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) owns and maintains most major roads (Highway 55, Highway 64, Ten Ten Road, etc.) and minor ‘collector’ roads (Apex Barbecue Road, Lake Pine Drive, Olive Chapel Road, Kelly Road, etc.).
Is it Town or State? Our road maintenance map will tell you! The blue lines indicate state-maintained roads, while the green lines show town-maintained roads.
