Resources Available for Laid Off Federal Employees
Over 4,700 Federal employees live in Frederick County. A sudden drastic reduction of the Federal workforce could affect thousands of Frederick County residents, as well as many small businesses that contract with Federal agencies. Fortunately, our community partners offer resources to help during this difficult time.
Earlier this month, a new web page was launched on the Frederick County Government website to provide information and links to resources available for anyone who may need assistance. See the resources at www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/Federal. This web page provides information on where to find assistance with food, medical and health care needs, payments for utilities, employment and other financial relief.
State Budget Priorities
Last month, Governor Wes Moore visited Frederick County to make some exciting announcements about his proposed Fiscal Year 2026 budget.
The Governor highlighted critical investments to fund long-awaited safety and capacity improvements along U.S. 15 between I-70 and MD-26, which is our County’s top transportation priority because it is among the most dangerous stretches of road in the region. This project is vital to the safety of our community and to the economic development of surrounding areas.
During the Governor’s visit, he also highlighted school construction investments in the proposed budget. Frederick County is the fastest growing school system in Maryland and this additional funding will help us move quickly on school construction projects already in the pipeline, improving the experience of students, educators, and families.
Budgets are the clearest expression of our values. I appreciate that Governor Moore is prioritizing highway safety needs and school construction. I also want to thank members of the Frederick County Delegation for their support on these critical issues. I look forward to working with the Governor, the General Assembly, and local leaders to pass this budget so we can continue making progress for residents.

County Budget
Thank you to everyone who came out to the budget town hall meetings last month to share their priorities for the County’s upcoming budget. These meetings were productive sessions, and I enjoyed hearing from you about what matters most in our communities. If you did not get a chance to attend a meeting, you can watch the video recordings in the FCG TV archives.

Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project
Along with residents, I have been incredibly concerned about the Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project (MPRP). I recently announced that Frederick County has filed the legal paperwork to petition to intervene in the Maryland Public Service Commission’s consideration of PSEG Renewable Transmission’s application for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for authority to construct the MPRP. The County filed the petition to intervene on February 6, 2025.
Along with the County Council, I also submitted legislative testimony in favor of Senate Bill 189. This legislation would prohibit the use of eminent domain on property with agricultural and conservation easements, providing protection for communities like ours.
While the law is clear that Frederick County does not have the authority to stop MPRP ourselves, we will continue to work with our partners on the County Council to amplify our residents’ voices and advocate against the project. The PSC indicated it will hold a public hearing in Frederick County, which will provide another opportunity for residents to be heard on this matter.
Please visit www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/MPRP to stay informed about this project.
Frederick County Earns Three AAA Bond Ratings
I am proud to share that Frederick County has once again earned AAA bond ratings from all three major bond rating agencies. Fitch, Moody’s, and Standard & Poor’s each recently reaffirmed Frederick County at the highest possible rating based on the County’s exceptional financial management.
Only 55 of the 3,000+ counties in the nation have AAA ratings from all three agencies. Similar to how a consumer’s high credit score allows them to borrow money for loans or mortgages at lower interest rates, bond ratings allow Frederick County to pay lower interest rates on the construction of schools, roads, libraries, parks, and more. ENOUGH Initiative
The Engaging Neighborhoods, Organizations, Unions, Governments and Households (ENOUGH) Initiative is a program created by Governor Wes Moore to help communities across the state of Maryland find ways to fight poverty in their neighborhoods.
The Frederick County ENOUGH Initiative is being created with input from people who live along the Golden Mile, along with help from government and private organizations. Over the next year, there will be meetings in these low-income areas. These meetings will give people a chance to share their ideas on why poverty exists in their communities. The information gathered will be used to create a detailed plan to help end poverty. Learn more about this initiative.

Affordable Housing Opportunties
Last month, we held two public sessions about affordable housing initiatives in Frederick County. Hosted by the Frederick County Division of Housing, these sessions were an opportunity for members of the community to learn about and share priorities for Frederick County’s Housing Needs Assessment and Strategic Plan. You can watch a recording of the January 23 meeting in the FCG TV archives.
Affordable housing is such in important issue that affects our economic viability, the well-being of our children, and so many other shared community values. I look forward to furthering the community conversation on how all households in Frederick County can have access to safe, affordable housing.
